IAEA Invites Essays on Innovative Strategies and Approaches to Manage NORM Residues and Waste

In October 2020 the IAEA will hold the International Conference on the Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) in Industry, which will provide an important international forum to discuss issues and challenges of NORM waste and contaminated sites worldwide. The conference is expected to pave the way for strengthening institutional and technical framework to advance implementation of relevant projects and programmes.

With the aim of promoting this topic among young generations, the IAEA Network of Environmental Management and Remediation (ENVIRONET) is inviting early career professionals up to 35 years of age to develop an essay outlining innovative strategies and approaches to manage NORM residues and waste aligned with the waste management hierarchy and the circular economy. The essay should indicate the industry where the residue or waste comes from and the fields of application. Economic considerations, safety and regulatory implications and stakeholder acceptability may be also considered. The essay must be original, written in English, and limited to 800 words. The essays should be sent to NORM2020@iaea.org until 14 August midnight (CEST). The submitted essays will be reviewed by an international panel of experts. The writer of the winning essay will be granted a lump sum, i.e. air ticket and lodging during the NORM2020 Conference, and will be invited to make a short presentation during the closing session.
